Grandma's Irish Soda Bread

Grandma's Soda bread can't be beat. We love cooking our family tradition for St. Patrick's Day!

Great, Great Grandma Westburg's Irish Soda Bread

3.5 Cups all purpose flour

3.5 Tsp baking powder

0.5 Tsp Baking Soda

1 Tsp Salt

3 Tbs. Sugar

2Tsp. Caraway Seeds

1 Cup Raisins

2 Tsp. Butter

1 Egg Beaten

1 Egg Yoke

2 Tsp. Water

2 Cups Buttermilk

Bake: 350 Degrees  1 Hour

1. Combine flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and soda. Stir in caraway seeds. Cut in butter.

2. Add raisins, combine buttermilk and egg, blend in flour mixture.

3. Turn out onto a lightly floured board. Kneed until smooth-25 times.

Shape into smooth ball. Place in a well greased 2 quart baking pan ( I use an 8inch cast iron pan). Cut a 4 inch cross about 1/4 inch deep across the top.

4. Lightly beat egg yolk and water, brush over loaf. Bake 60 to 70 minutes. Use a wooden spoon to knock on the bread, it should sound hollow.

Enjoy!
